Sistas Caring 4 Sistas’ mission is to reduce adverse birth-related outcomes among individuals of color by providing doula services, advocacy, and education with a vision to eliminate the barriers contributing to birth-related inequities among persons of color. In Buncombe County in 2016; infant mortality rates are 3.1 times more likely black and brown families than their white counterparts. Since 2016, SistasCaring4Sistas has supported over 300 families in Buncombe County and has trained over 10 doulas. Currently SC4S has 34 doulas across the western counties of North Carolina. Outcomes include: an increase in breastfed babies, increased birth weights, decreased infant and maternal death rates, and an increase in referrals for doula support for substance misuse families.
